GEORGE NEWS - NMU George Campus students can now have their manicures, pedicures, clean shaves and all hair services on campus as their fellow students have opened a hair and beauty salon on campus.
The Madibaz Salon is a student entrepreneurship project established by Student Life and Development to empower student entrepreneurial skills.
The project seeks to expose and empower students to run their own businesses rather than be job seekers.
"This initiative is meant to make students self-reliant and to become employers, providing fellow students access to essential services that they require, near their residences. In addition, it is safe and controlled at the university and adds to the vibrancy and campus culture," said Dr Sefoko Ramoshaba, deputy director of Student Life and Development.
At the launch of the Madibaz Salon, senior director of the George Campus Dr Kaluke Mawila shared words of encouragement and excitement for this great initiative. "Such initiatives not only improve student development on campus but also shape young people by giving them true life experiences.
"You are now proud business leaders, and you will learn valuable entrepreneurial skills for the world out there."
Third-year marketing student Sinovuyo Sobekwa, second-year tourism management student Simamkele Nomsobo and third-year forestry student Mkulise Mnqobeli will run and manage the salon's operations.
The Madibaz Salon is adjacent to the campus tuck shop, near the residences, and offers barber services, manicures, pedicures, hair washing and treatments, braiding (extensions and natural hair) and make-up.
Initially, bookings for appointments will be done through the students via WhatsApp. A booking app is currently being developed to make bookings and payments electronic and easy.
The modern and bright Madibaz Salon is expected to become a big attraction.
Students of NMU George Campus now have a hair and beauty salon on campus, run by students themselves.
