The three animal activist groups were quite visible with their posters, which spelt out the gravity with which the rights of these animals are being threatened.
Over 100 people participated and Garden Route Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GRSPCA), organiser and Chairman Heather Church joined in the march around the Garden Route Botanical Garden. The march was in reaction to thousands of rhinos and elephant being poached in South Africa. The country's current laws have gaps allowing lions to be bred in captivity with the sole purpose of being shot in a controlled environment from which lions have no escape (fenced-in areas), by trophy hunters. Acti-vists feel that this is a cruel practice.
On their return from the walk, most people and dogs joined in or watched the fun dog show. Hosted by Horace Bloch, the show was greatly enjoyed by all and the winners received some top quality prizes. The judges had a very difficult task in choosing the prize winners as they thought all the dogs deserved accolades. Church thanked everyone who participated as well as the SPCA staff and ever-faithful group of volunteers who cheerfully give their time and energy to help the SPCA. She also thanked the Garden Route Botanical Garden Trust for allowing the use of the gardens.
Many participants joined the GRSPCA as members (now half-price until April), which gives them significant discounts at local retailers. Many people found out that their My School card could be used at numerous local outlets to raise funds for the GRSPCA if they make them a beneficiary. If you would like to become a member, volunteer or My School card holder please call the George SPCA on 044 878 1990.
The SPCA's ' Bark in the Park' took place in brilliant sunshine making it a pleasant affair.
