GEORGE NEWS - Two men were arrested earlier this morning, Friday 29 November, in connection with the murder of Joan Singrew (53).
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed that Conville police have arrested two men, aged 45 and 46, in connection with the murder.
“The suspects remain in police custody. They are expected to make their first court appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2 December,” he said.
Asked where the men were arrested, Spies said that it is an ongoing police probe and the police are not at liberty to respond to other matters aired in George Herald’s media enquiry at this stage.
Singrew's body was discovered near Great Brak River on Monday 25 November, on her 54th birthday.
She was reported missing by her daughter on Thursday 21 November and was last seen at her home in St Mary Street at 07:30 that same day. Friends and family became concerned after she didn't arrive at work.
When Singrew’s daughter got home after work that evening and there was still no sign of her mother, she reported her missing at the Conville Police Station.
The family also posted about her disappearance on Facebook.
Four days later, at about 14:50, a search party led by the Great Brak police and a K9 unit discovered her body in the bushes after a sniffer dog guided its handler to the area next to the footpath near Charles Street. Here they found a Go George jacket, allegedly belonging to Singrew, in the undergrowth. Shortly thereafter her lifeless body was found.
According to information obtained by George Herald, it appears that she was strangled.
