GEORGE - "Years of isolation from international sport deprived South Africans of so much knowledge regarding practical sport science," recounts Anthony Walton, physical therapist at the new Sports Win Clinic.
"Premiership footballers and top sports persons in every field of international sport regard sports massage as an integral part of their training. Regular sports massage allows for more training at a higher level with greater safety."
Anthony began his sport medicine career while he was a Durban ge-neral practitioner during the 70s. He coached the pressure squad of Alisdair Hatfield’s Queen’s Park swimming club in sport psychology and provided sports massage for nationally competing club members of all ages.
Appointed to a first division rugby team he also lectured for NABA (Natal Amateur Bodybuilding Association), massaging training aches and promoting muscle growth. Deep pressure frictions create micro trauma that stacks muscles fibre tearing of heavy weight training. In England he learnt techniques that eliminate fat over bodybuilders’ abductors and love handles!
Taking early retirement from general practice he studied alternative and preventative sports massage techniques at a UK holistic college. He has worked at Crystal Palace, home of British Olympiads, on occasion providing sports massage to 25 visiting nationalities; held appointments to the British Tae-kwondo Federation, a national American football team, three semiprofessional UK soccer teams and was the appointed physical therapist to the British national karate team fighting in Europe, the East and Eastern Europe during his term.
Anthony has run onto countless rugby fields and football pitches, treating injuries, and officiated at numerous national sporting events. For more than 35 years he has treated and massaged swimmers, rugby players, runners, fighters and gymnasts at provincial, national and international level.
His website, sportswinclinic.com, contains testimonials from referring doctors, physiotherapists, athletes, personal trainers and a re-commendation from the Tanzanian Rugby Union vice-president, a South African player on the national side.
Why did he move to George?
"Travelling the world all those years I would show people a Garden Route pictorial aerogram saying 'one day I’m going to retire there’.
Anthony and Letesia, married 39 years, do not look like they are about to retire.
"We love it here, South Africa is still the best place in the world. South Africans need to realise there is nothing better out there. The people of George are amazing and have really taken us into their hearts."
