GEORGE NEWS - The economic forecast for the country does not look bright. Furthermore, many municipalities are struggling to operate and maintain their services infrastructure in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
With these words, George Mayor Melvin Naik called on the administration of George Municipality to take a disciplined approach to financial spending in his address to Council last Thursday. Naik said although they find themselves financially stable, it seems that the municipality is a "cash cow".
"Remember, every time that you switch on your computer, when an employee takes a vehicle on the road, when you make a print copy, when you use your landline... it is tax payers' money that we spend."

Naik said the challenges are not getting easier. He referred to two feedback meetings from the community and said in many instances their complaints are justified. "The community identified small but impactful concerns that need attention, for example the turnaround time of responding to complaints, the monitoring of the execution of services (we heard how workers sleep on the job, and even drink on the job).
"I have given the public the commitment of the political will to be of service to them, but this will not be successful if the administrative support is absent."
