GEORGE NEWS - A big treat is in store for all lovers of fine classical music! On Sunday 28 July the George Music Society will present Charlotte Potgieter, a violinist all the way from Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
She will be accompanied by the highly esteemed pianist and accompanist Tertia Visser Downie from Cape Town.
They will perform compositions by Schubert, Johann Hendrik Potgieter, Marlis Potgieter, Grieg and several other composers.
This once-off concert for George will start at 15:30 at the Dotsure George Arts Theatre and tickets will cost R170 for public, R50 for children and only R120 for George Music Society members. Carlotte Potgieter grew up in South Africa and learned to play the violin at the age of three. She participated in many eisteddfods, competitions and courses through the years.
After completing her Bachelor of Music at Wits University she continued her studies in the Netherlands with several scholarships.
Charlotte is leader of the second violin group of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. She was concertmaster and artistic leader of a play-conduct string orchestra consisting of Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra members for several years.
She is also a member of the Rozenburg piano trio and piano quartet and the violin Duo Opus Posthumus. She also coaches students in orchestral playing and audition training.
Tertia Visser Downie
Tertia Visser Downie is an accomplished South African pianist who studied under several great masters after winning the prestigious Mabel Quick Overseas Scholarship.
She completed her honours degree at the University of Stellenbosch, as well as the Unisa performer's and teacher's licentiates, both with distinction.
Tertia is regularly invited as an official accompanist at globally acclaimed music competitions and regularly accompanies award-winning musicians at various events.
Her talent is versatile. In 2008 she took the leading female role in Pieter Dirk Uys' play Appasionata and in 2009 she joined renowned poet Phillip de Vos on a national tour to bring masterpieces by Mussorgsky and Schumann to stage, radio and television.
Tertia has produced numerous CD, and established the 'Tots in Tune' programme designed to introduce classical music to toddlers. In November 2016, she received a fellowship from the Trinity College of Music.
She has been organising the very successful Erin Hall concert series since 2014.
