GEORGE NEWS - Five people were injured in three different road accidents over the past weekend. One of the accidents happened on the gravel road to the Gwaiing River mouth. Only one vehicle was involved in this accident and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the accident could not be confirmed by the time of going to print.
On Saturday 16 October, George Police opened a reckless and negligent driving docket following an accident on the N2 near the Glentana turn-off in the direction of Mossel Bay at approximately 21:30.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies said no arrests were made and circumstances surrounding the accident are still being investigated. "It is alleged that a Toyota Corolla was travelling on the road when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned. Reports from the scene indicate that four occupants sustained injuries and received medical treatment on scene," he said.
According to unconfirmed information the driver of the vehicle was not on the scene when emergency services arrived.
Three of the occupants were taken to George Hospital by ER24 paramedics to be treated for minor injuries.

A replacement contractor is being appointed to complete the widening of the Gwaiing River bridge.
Accident at Gwaiing Bridge roadworks
Police were dispatched to an accident on the N2 highway on Sunday afternoon at approximately 12:45 near the Gwaiing River bridge were roadworks are currently taking place.
Information available indicates that a Ford bakkie used for courier services and an Audi with a Knysna registration collided.
One female occupant of the Audi sustained injuries. "The cause of the accident is yet to be determined," said Spies. By the time of going to print the cause of the accident could not be confirmed.
Construction on the bridge
In the meantime, a replacement contractor to complete the outstanding work on the widening of the Gwaiing River bridge on the N2 is being appointed by the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral).
The project has been standing still for about six months. It is the second time that work on the bridge has been stopped since the contract began on 29 January 2018.
Both times were due to the contractor, KPMM Construction, running into financial difficulty. The duration of the contract was 30 months and the initial completion date was set for 28 July 2020.
Sanral Western Region manager Randall Cable said they expect a new contractor will be appointed by mid-October.
A portion of the N2 was closed for traffic on Sunday evening, 17 October, while a damaged barrier was being repaired after a car accident earlier that evening.
