GEORGE NEWS - What started out as a teacher's nightmare when the head of a local crèche discovered the Civic Centre to be unsafe for a preschool year-end concert turned out very well in the end.
The George Herald reported last week about the horror that met Aletta Janse van Rensburg, head and owner of Heeltyd Speeltyd crèche, when she arrived at the Civic Centre with busloads of children to practise for their concert scheduled for last weekend.
Despite a number of maintenance-related problems, including holes in the flooring and large staples on the stage floor, the George Municipality managed to work down the long list of issues and resolve most of them.
According to Janse van Rensburg, the only issue they could not solve was the poor stage lighting which left some parents without a clear view of their youngsters.
"Overall, everything in the hall and on the stage worked. George Municipality made an effort to transform one of the storerooms into a changing room where the children could change," said Janse van Rensburg earlier this week.
Although the crèche owner was promised a reimbursement for one of the practice sessions to compensate for their difficulties, she said it hasn't yet reflected in her bank account.
"Regardless, we are relieved that it all turned out well," said Janse van Rensburg. "There was a nice atmosphere with about 550 people attending the concert. The people were in a good mood after the rugby."
Janse van Rensburg thanked every parent, child, grandmother and grandfather who helped to make the event memorable.
