GEORGE NEWS - George residents will pay more for electricity from today, Wednesday 1 July, when the municipality’s new electricity tariffs come into effect.
Prepaid electricity purchases will cost 7.88% more, while applicable fixed monthly electricity charges will also increase.
For prepaid customers, the electricity tariff increases from R3.44 to R3.71 per kWh (VAT-inclusive) - an increase of R0.27 per kWh.
A household purchasing 500kWh of electricity will see the cost rise from R1 720 to R1 855.53 - an increase of R135.53 per month.
Alternatively, households that continue to spend the same amount on prepaid electricity will receive fewer units. A customer spending R1 720 will now receive about 463.48 kWh, compared with 500kWh previously - a reduction of 36.5 kWh, or 7.3% fewer units.
In addition to the consumption tariff increase, fixed monthly charges are also rising. For a typical 60-amp residential connection, the combined basic and capacity charges increase from R569.33 to R614.53 per month, an increase of R45.20 or 7.94%.
