SPORT NEWS - Hoekwil is preparing to welcome some of the country's top multisport athletes when it hosts the South African Duathlon Championships on Saturday 11 July.
Hosted by Eden Triathlon, in partnership with Chain Gang Events, these national championships will be held in Hoekwil for the second consecutive year.
Athletes from across the country will take on a challenging course through the area, and the race categories cater for athletes of all ages and abilities. Distances include the long, standard, sprint and super sprint events, offering everything from junior racing to elite and para competition.
The first athletes will get under way at 08:00. The racing will continue throughout the day until the final sprint events conclude at about 16:00.
The championships will feature seven race categories. The long-distance event consists of a 15km run, 60km cycle and 7.5km run, while the standard distance race covers a 10km run, 40km cycle and 5km run. Younger athletes aged 12 to 15 will compete in the super sprint event, comprising a 2.5km run, a 10km cycle and a 1.25km run.
Sprint-distance races will also be contested by juniors, para athletes, age group competitors and open entrants over a 5km run, a 20km cycle and a 2.5km run.
Spectators are encouraged to head to Hoekwil Primary School to experience the action, enjoy the festive atmosphere and support local food vendors and coffee stalls.
