GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Victoria Bay guest house owner Colin Horn sent in a photo and a video of what seemed to be sewage water flowing from the culvert onto the beach in front of his property.
He was anxious that his guests, visiting George for the Dimension Data golf tournament, would be greeted with the stench and a polluted beach.
George Municipality acted swiftly and cleaned it up, also doing water sample testing which indicated that the brown water and reek were not due to sewage. Samples taken in the waves in the bay were "normal and within acceptable levels for recreational use", assured municipal communications chief Chantel Edwards-Klose.
She said the stench may have originated from nearby milkwood trees that give off a stench when in bloom.
"The municipality has investigated the area to see if there was any other possible source of sewage leak or other contamination, but has so far not identified any such leak or spill."
Over the years, George Herald has reported on many sewage spills at Victoria Bay. One of the causes is the sewage pump cutting out during load shedding.
Asked if backup power would be considered, Edwards-Klose said the municipality "will definitely look at all possible alternatives, subject to budgetary allowances and environmental regulations".
