GEORGE NEWS - Soccer match official Cynthia Dick is a woman in a man's world. The 22-year-old assistant referee officiates at regional and provincial level, refereeing for the Western Cape ABC Motsepe Provincial League.
Cynthia was born and bred in George, starting her school career at Tyholorha Primary School in Thembalethu and going on to Thembalethu High.
Her day job is as a firefighter at Working for Fire.
She initially started refereeing early in 2021 to keep her busy on the weekends and never thought she would fall in love with it. However, her soccer journey soon became a dream that she pursued with everything she's got.
She remembers well how she felt to be officiating in her first Western Cape ABC Motsepe Provincial League match.
"I was very excited, but at the same time a little nervous and scared. But I told myself not to be afraid, because they must have had good reason to choose me, and that helped me face the challenge with confidence and faith in myself," she says.
This up-and-coming young woman's goal is to become the best and to officiate at matches across the globe.
"To all the young women who want to excel as match officials, my advice is to trust and believe in yourself. Stick to the basics and remember, anything is possible!"
