Update
GEORGE NEWS - The reason for the violent protests which started in the early hours of Wednesday morning and shook the communities of Thembalethu, Lawaaikamp and Parkdene, is yet unknown.
George Mayor Melvin Naik confirmed that no official confirmation had been received by the George Municipality as to the reason for these actions.
“The municipality has not received any documentation and or indication of who is leading the protest,” said Municipal Spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose. “A meeting has been set up with the community for Thursday (today) to attempt to resolve the issues.”
Naik said that the departments of Electro-technical and Human Settlement have been in dialogue with the relevant community for several months.
“A transformer has been installed at this settlement and the electrification of the area is ongoing. Three transformers are due to be installed within the next two months with each providing electricity to approximately 40 households.”
Edwards-Klose said the municipality and police remain on high alert in the event of a recurrence of the events.
