GEORGE NEWS - The NSRI Wilderness crew went to the rescue of three men and their rubber duck that drifted precariously close to rocks off-shore from Gericke's Point near Sedgefield at 09:30 on Sunday 16 September.
They were alerted by a member of the public and responded quickly when NSRI Sedgefield's Sea Rescue called for help. The craft Oscar's Rescue was launched and rendezvoused with the casualty craft, a 4,7m rubber duck, with three local men on board.
"They were at that stage in no immediate danger, in calm seas with a light breeze," said Garth Dominy, NSRI Wilderness deputy station commander, "but adrift due to motor mechanical failure.
They would have eventually drifted onto the rocks at Gericke's Point. We set up a towline and towed the casualty craft into deeper water and away from danger. The sea rescue craft Spirit of Rotary was launched from our Wilderness Sea Rescue station and on her arrival, the three men from the casualty craft were taken ashore.
The NSRI crew manned their boat and the towline was transferred and Spirit of Rotary towed the casualty craft to Swartvlei Beach without incident. Once safely beached, their craft was loaded onto her trailer and no further assistance was required."
The operation was completed at 11:30.
Sea rescue emergencies can be reported by dialling 112 from a cellphone.
