GEORGE NEWS - The collapse of a section of the main route to Nelson Mandela University (NMU) George Campus has severely impacted staff and students, according to Milisa Piko, campus communications officer.
A section of Madiba Drive has collapsed, leaving the Seven Passes road from Wilderness as the only access route to the campus.
"Given the extreme weather, staff and students in George have been advised to remain vigilant. A series of mitigation plans have also been put in place," said Piko.
"A few in-person, mask-to-mask examinations were quickly moved to an online assessment format and arrangements put in place for future exams. Alternative transport plans were also introduced," said Piko.
The specifics of arrangements are being continuously shared with George Campus staff, who have also introduced WhatsApp groups to better manage their operations in the present circumstances.
Staff were also advised to stay in contact with their line managers and where possible, continue to work from home. There are limited essential services operating on campus, and so staff and students have been encouraged to keep their work, study and living environments clean.
Piko said the George Campus emergency management team is working closely with the George Emergency Services seeing that more rain is anticipated for the area this week.
The collapse of Madiba Drive has left NMU George Campus with access from Wilderness only.
