WILDERNESS NEWS - The Wilderness Ratepayers and Residents Association Fire Forum (WRRA FF) is presenting an information-packed fire presentation on Wednesday 7 August at the Wilderness Hotel at 18:00 for 18:30.
Property owners in the greater Wilderness region (or any fire-risk area) will soon be provided with a booklet drawn up specifically to help them live more safely in this beautiful, but fire-prone area.
"Wilderness is an extreme fire-risk area. We are some way from fire services, we have homes abutting a national park, plus many plots still harbour pines and wattles," says Andre Hacquebord, who has been a driving force behind the formation of the WRRA FF. "We researched other high fire-risk spots such as southern Australia and discovered that lives, assets and most houses are unlikely to be lost if someone defends them, and the safest place is a well-prepared house and property."
Fire booklet
The WRRA Fire Forum set about producing a highly informative 16-page booklet that educates property owners on how fires behave. One of the alarming facts is that for every 10-degree incline of land, a fire-front doubles its speed.
The booklet states what actions to take to protect properties including staying versus evacuating. The centre spread provides a personal fire plan where tasks can be pre-allocated to specific family members in case of fire. A rehearsed fire plan helps reduce panic, one of your biggest enemies in the face of an approaching fire.
To get your copy of this booklet, greater Wilderness property owners are invited to attend the fire talk. For more information, send an e-mail to fireforum@wrra.co.za.
