GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - The George Municipality's fire services and disaster management now boasts a brand-new 1800cc Jetrib. A Jetrib is a jetski with the pontoons of a rubber duck and although there are other Jetribs around, this is the first 1 800cc version in South Africa.
According to Cornelius Barnard (disaster management and chief fire officer), this rescue vessel is a must-have for surf sea rescue.
"The agility of the larger engine allows for faster response and movement in between the waves, the safety of the pontoon floating on top of the water increases the rescue capabilities of the Jetrib in shallow surf much more efficiently than what a normal or smaller rubber duck would provide," he said.
With the new rescue vessel are, from left: Johan Troskie, Josh Scholtz (lifeguards crew leader), Cornelius Barnard (disaster management and chief fire officer) and Jeandré Bernardo (rescue swimmer).
The Jetrib is operated by two people, a skipper and a rescue swimmer who can carry a third person (a victim). "The Jetrib is an extremely versatile sea vessel, and we are very proud to have it as part of George Municipality's fleet of rescue equipment, especially since it is in time for the season," Barnard said.
"The skipper, firefighter Johan Troskie, is a very well-versed and skilled skipper for these vessels. Together with his rescue team and the new vessel they make a great contribution and [the Jetrib] increases their ability to do shallow surf rescue during the season."
