GEORGE NEWS - Chantelle Kyd (36) a former financial clerk at Thembalethu and Dellville Park primary schools was found guilty on all 66 charges of fraud involving R330 000 by Magistrate Eugenia Jacobs in the Thembalethu Regional Court today (Thursday 9 November).
State Prosecutor Brandon Smith said, “The State did its homework, our witnesses were credible. I am satisfied that justice has been served.”
Jacobs said the final nail in the coffin was the personal letter that the Kyd wrote to Robert Grootboom, the headmaster saying, “I am ashamed (ek sak my kop in skaamte) at what I have done and hope that one day Mr Grootboom will maybe understand how desperate I was.
"I am sorry that you, Mr Makan and the school are victims of my actions.
"She battled with herself as she knew she was wrong and was desperate to ask for forgiveness,” Jacobs said.
The court accepted Mornay Wildeman’s testimony. Wildeman, who cashed 90% of the cheques at the bank, turned state witness and received indemnity from prosecution.
Jacobs said he (Wildeman) was contacted by Kyd to collect the cheques and cash them, receiving his cut of between R200 and R300 per cheque for the work done.
He is Kyd’s cousin.
The case has been remanded to Thursday 14 December for sentencing.
