GEORGE NEWS - The Kei apple, also known as the Appelkoosdoring (Dovyalis caffra), is a small evergreen tree or large shrub with round waxy leaves and long thorns, which grows to a height of about 4m.
The nursery at the Garden Route Botanical Garden has plenty of Kei apple trees in stock.
The Kei apple is known for its large, tasty apricot-coloured fruit, which is rich in vitamin C and can be eaten fresh or made into delicious jams or preserves.
Birds, especially loeries, love the fruit, as do monkeys and baboons. The insignificant flowers lure many insects, especially butterflies, while game and goats browse on the leaves.
Uses
The Kei apple can be used in many ways. It makes a very secure hedge if planted about 1,5 to 2m apart and trimmed regularly.
It is also a good bonsai specimen and is suitable for small and coastal gardens, as it is drought and wind resistant. The root system is non-invasive and it has a moderate to fast growth rate.
The Kei Apple responds well to pruning, which will give it a good shape and ensure dense foliage and plentiful fruit.
Plant in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade and water well to establish, after which it can be regarded as water-wise.
The Garden Route Botanical Garden nursery at 49 Caledon Street, George, is open Mondays to Thursdays from 08:30 to 16:30, Fridays from 08:30 to 14:30, and Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:00.

* The nursery urgently needs old plant pots as it helps to keep prices down. Please drop them off at the nursery.
