GEORGE NEWS - Under the new by-law, locals can now expect a fine of R1 000 for leaving cats or dogs without supervision in sweltering heat in their cars.
The issue was brought to the fore again in a warning posted on Facebook by Garden Route SPCA Senior Inspector Salome Bruyns on Thursday 8 February, when extreme hot conditions hit the Southern Cape.
Garden Route SPCA is now working with Law Enforcement to help curb continual trespassing of the by-law.
Animal owners found leaving their animals in cars can be prosecuted under the Animals' Protection Act No 71 of 1962.
"The SPCA will not tolerate negligence against the law," said Bruyns.
Bruyns encourages people to rather leave their dogs at home because a "quick run" into the shop can extend to longer shopping.
Dogs and cats can't sweat like humans, so they pant to lower their body temperature.
If they're inside a car breathing and recycling hot air, panting gives no relief, and heat stroke can occur quickly.
Anyone who wants to report dogs being left in a car without supervision may contact the Garden Route SPCA on 044 878 1990 or on the emergency after hours number 082 378 7384.
