GEORGE NEWS - In the spirit of Mandela Month, the Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) Garden Route District office ended off last month with a donation of valuable assets to St Mary's Primary School in George.
This is part of Stats SA's Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative. The handover took place on Wednesday 31 July.
The donations included laptops, computers, printers, other electronic devices, office furniture and other essential items to enhance the students' educational experience. The staff also prepared food and snacks for the Grade 7 students of St Mary's.
This initiative underscores Stats SA's commitment to supporting education and empowering the youth in our communities. Stats SA believes that access to technology is crucial in today's learning environment, and they are proud to contribute to the growth and development of St Mary's Primary School.
The Western Cape Provincial Survey Statistician, Sive Sitole, delivered an educational awareness session for the learners and conducted a mathematical quiz. General information regarding the country, province, and town population count was also shared.
Stats SA also highlighted the surveys they conduct monthly throughout the year and requested the learners to educate the community on the importance of the data collected and the significance of gaining access to sampled households in the various communities in the district.
Every year, Stats SA conducts the following surveys:
• Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey: the main objective is to provide supplementary data on governance statistics and to outline the results based on the individual’s responses on:
- The use and satisfaction of government/public services
- The experiences of selected government/public institutions
- Trust in government/public institutions
- Experiences of corruption
• Domestic tourism survey: This aims to collect accurate statistics on the travel behaviour and expenditure of residents of South Africa travelling within the borders of South Africa.
• General household survey: This is used to measure the level of development and performance of various government programs and projects.
• Quarterly labour survey: This focuses on the South African labour market, specifically the country's unemployment rate. It collects information on the labour market activity of individuals aged 15 years and older and provides the official measures of employment and unemployment in the country. It was an absolute privilege to engage with learners at St Mary’s and Stats SA would like to thank everyone involved in making this possible. Together, we are building a brighter future for our children.
