GEORGE NEWS - A large group of trail runners of Garden Route Trail Runners (GTR) as well as hikers took part in an initiative to revive the lights on the cross at the foot of George Peak on Tuesday night, 15 December.
Zane Schamhl said the lights have been replaced a couple of times by his fellow hikers, Jacques Mouton and Francois Smit, but were constantly being vandalised and stolen.
"This has been a passion of Jacques and Francois who have put a lot of effort and thought into the lights. They have now attached the lights with stronger and better brackets which would hopefully prevent them from being stolen again," he said. "Their persistence should be an example for all of us."
Once they reached their destination, the group of hikers were treated to a performance by local violinist, Lynette de Jager.
"Thank you to everyone who joined us and a special thank-you to the owner of the cross, Lohan Oosthuizen of Wispernet and his team for making this possible," said Schamhl.
The GTR social calendar is packed with free events for December. For more information, visit www.mountco.co.za.
