GEORGE NEWS - Musicians in South Africa will soon benefit from the doctoral thesis by one of our very own.
Gretchen Jansen (29) of George recently obtained her doctoral degree at the University of Stellenbosch's (US) Faculty of Law.
She specialises in mercantile law and since 2019, she has been lecturing on intel-lectual property law in the digital environment, business organisations law, and the law and technology. She is also a member of the Anton Mostert Chair of Intellectual Property.
"It's been four years of hard work, so I'm both relieved and happy! And very grateful for the continued support of my parents and family," says Gretchen.
Her doctoral dissertation is titled A Critical Examination of Performers' Rights to Remuneration as an Effective Protective Mechanism for Commercial Musicians in South Africa, which she completed under the supervision of Prof Sadulla Karjiker earlier this year.
Jansen's parents, Henry and Coethrun, who are still rooted in George, joined their daughter at her graduation ceremony at Blaauwklippen Restaurant outside Stellenbosch at the end of March.
"We're incredibly proud of Gretchen's dedication to achieving this mile- stone," says Henry, who served 23 years as deputy director of water and sanitation at George Munici-pality's Civil Services Directorate before retiring. Coethrun, also retired, dedicated 26 years to education as a teacher at Pacaltsdorp Primary School.
Gretchen Jansen's research interests include intellectual property law in the digital environment, art law and performers’ protection.
