Boy hit by small truck
An 11-year-old boy was hit by a small Kia truck in Conville on Monday morning, 21 June, when he was on his way to school. The incident occurred in Pienaar Street near the railway line.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies, the child was allegedly crossing the road when he was hit by the vehicle.
He sustained head injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance. A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated.
Armed robbery at Pacaltsdorp shop
Pacaltsdorp detectives are investigating a case of business robbery following an incident in Aloe Street on Sunday 20 June at approximately 19:00. According to Spies it is believed that three armed men entered the shop and threatened the owners, after which they made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime, cigarettes and a cellphone.
No one has been arrested and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the detective branch on 044 803 9100.
Nearly 300 arrested last weekend
A total of 282 suspects were arrested for various offences in the Southern Cape over the weekend. Crime prevention operations included high density deployment in crime-stricken areas, visits to liquor outlets, closing down of drug outlets, vehicle check points, blue light patrols and search and seizure operations.
One such an arrest was made on Friday evening, 18 June, when the Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team arrested a man in Ellen Vena Street, Lawaaikamp while patrolling the streets.
According to Spies the suspect (36) tried to run away when he saw the police officers, but was eventually caught with 50 bankies of tik and 23 Mandrax tablets in his possession.
"Four more suspects were arrested in Conville on the same evening after Mandrax and tik were found in their possession," said Spies.
Burglaries in Blanco
Burglars were on the prowl in Blanco last weekend. In one incident chickens were stolen from a smallholding in Maitland Street near Golden Valley in the early morning hours of Sunday 19 June. According to George police communications officer, Capt Nolonwabo Tshengu, approximately 50 live chickens were taken.
"According to the owner she had locked the chicken coop at approximately 18:30 on Saturday evening and when she returned the following morning she found the door had been forced open. The value of the chickens is estimated at R6 000," said Tshengu.
On the same night a vehicle was broken into in Montagu Street where a car jack kit and a number of other tools were stolen.
Tshengu said the owner allegedly parked the vehicle at approximately 20:30 on Saturday and found it broken into the following morning. Any person with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the detective, Warrant Officer Melvin Carolus, on 044 803 4769/14.
A number of attempted burglaries and break-ins were also reported on the area's neighbourhood watch WhatsApp groups. No arrests have been made.
