GEORGE NEWS - Pacaltsdorp Library is calling on people who are visually impaired or for other reasons cannot read, to join its mini-library for the blind.
According to Rachel Williams, manager of Library Services in George, a mini-library for the blind has been functioning at Pacaltsdorp for some time, but people are either not aware of this service or not sure how it works.
The library would like to introduce members to the service and also explain to them how it is linked to the National Library of the Blind in Makhanda.
A survey is currently being done to establish how many visually impaired people there are in Pacaltsdorp.
Mini-libraries offer many advantages to users, including increased social interaction, access to information, a variety of technological tools and training on how to use them, participation in library programmes such as book discussions, book clubs and other library activities, and of course, encouraging a greater interest in reading.
The mini-library project is a collaboration between the Department of Arts & Culture (DAC) and the South African Library for the Blind (SALB) that was launched in the Eastern Cape in 2010 and has since been expanded to other provinces.
Members of the public who are blind or cannot read are asked to contact Amgelica Zass, the coordinator of the service, on 071 074 6918, Pacaltsdorp staff members Elton Snyders or Roby Parks on 044 803 9340, or via email at rbparks@george.gov.za.
"We would like to encourage visually and illiterate people to take full advantage of this service by indicating to us (Library Services) if any people meet these requirements (that are visually impaired or illiterate)," said Williams.
"They can sign up for this service (become library members) by registering at Pacaltsdorp Library. Please bring along your ID and proof of residence to sign up. All interested ones can visit the library during operational hours."
The Pacaltsdorp Library hours are Monday to Thursday between 09:00 and 17:30 and on Fridays between 09:00 and 17:00.
