Update
GEORGE NEWS - The young woman, Louwina Meiring (26), who sustained severe burn wounds to her face, legs and arms after a petrol bomb detonated in a Go George bus on Wednesday 1 March, is recovering well.
Like many others that morning, Meiring was on her way to work on the early morning bus. The bus was travelling down Protea Road in New Dawn Park, Pacaltsdorp, when two petrol bombs were thrown at the bus.
Both bombs were aimed at the driver's side of the bus. One of the bombs was thrown through a window in the back section of the bus and ended up in the middle of the aisle.
"The bomb fell in my lap, so I pushed it away," Meiring said.
Meiring was sitting at the window through which the bomb entered the bus. She sustained second- and third-degree burn wounds to her face, arms and legs and was hospitalised along with 10 other people with various injuries.
She was flown to Tygerberg Hospital's ICU burn unit on Friday 3 March where she has been receiving care.
According to a source close to the family, Meiring's skin transplants have been successful so far and her wounds are healing nicely.
Bandages have been removed from her hands but there is still work to be done on her legs. The good news is that she has been discharged from the ICU and placed in a general ward, and continues to get stronger.
All the other patients have been discharged from hospital. Multiple attempts by George Herald to get in touch with other victims have not yet succeeded.
No arrests have been made in connection with the bombing.
