The aim of the project is to make George the geranium capi-tal of South Africa and even the world. Georgians are encouraged to plant geraniums in every available space - gardens, plant boxes, pavements, balconies, baskets attached to streetlamps, at their place of work - anywhere possible!
Proving that Greta's project is not just a beautiful dream and fast becoming a reality, a massive load of garden soil was recently unloaded at the Garden Route Botanical Garden in George.
The garden’s staff is propagating geranium plants in huge quantities and the soil was kindly sponsored by Terblanche Transport.
Fancourt also sponsored a huge quantity of prime compost indicating the wonderful support Greta's project is enjoying from large business, while small businesses have also come on board.
In preparation for the World Cup Soccer, and especially for George's 200 year celebrations next year, Greta and the York Environmental Club planted a large number of colourful geraniums in the enclosed entrance area at the George Tourism Office.
This is the starting point of the project which will continue for the rest of the year.
Hopefully by next year, the whole of George will be in blooming readiness to celebrate the city’s bicentenary.
Anyone wishing to become involved with this wonderful project, phone Greta on 044 878 2122 or 072 670 2900 (mor-nings only) or Ina Scholtz Landscaping on 084 749 1806.
Donations, physical help or geranium cuttings will be much appreciated.
