GEORGE NEWS - A donation of 70 laptops to the George campus of the South Cape TVET College will enable students to complete their studies through remote learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The computers were funded by the Department of Higher Education (DHET) and NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme). This donation came from a total of 426 laptops sponsored by the department and NSFAS.
South Cape College acting principal Dr Tercia Terblanche said this was a "profound moment" for the college and the community at large as students now have a remote learning tool.
The computers were handed over during a visit of Higher Education and Training Minister Dr Blade Nzimande where he also launched the digital learning device programme for TVET colleges.
"This momentous visit of Minister Nzimande truly uplifted the students and brought good spirits and immense feelings of happiness and camaraderie in a very dark time in the history of our country. We are grateful to Minister Nzimande for choosing our college for the launch and we will forever treasure this memorable event," said Terblanche. She also thanked NSFAS CEO Andile Nongogo for making the donation possible.

Nzimande's visit followed after South Cape College obtained an unqualified clean audit for 2020, the third consecutive clean audit with no material findings since 2018.
"This is due to the leadership of the our former principal, Mrs Potgieter and senior management team, especially Mrs De Jager (deputy principal finance) and her team, and all staff who adhered diligently to the stringent procurement and supply chain processes during 2020.
"A special word of thanks for the thorough oversight governance role of the council finance committee members under leadership of Anton Gericke, and the audit and risk committee members under leadership of Mr Dippenaar who ensured that all processes linked to the Auditor General audit for 2020 were successfully completed. All college councillors are highly commended and appreciated for their support and oversight roles during 2020."
