According to Chantel Edwards-Klose, the George Municipality's media liaison officer, the committees are made up of youth representatives from the area and an official from the youth office.
"An information session was also conducted by the Environmental Health Practitioners (EHP) of the George Municipality around the importance of keeping your environment clean, recycling and the roles of the EHP. The SA Sport for Change Programme is a 2010 World Cup legacy initiative implemented by Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and supported by the German government. The play parks were installed specifically for the youth as part of the SA Sport for Change programme."
Edwards-Klose says the programme is aimed at the prevention of violence through sport among children in and outside the schooling system. "It implements this through three key components: the construction of community level ball sport facilities, the promotion of community and municipal ownership and the delivery of sport and life skills training to the youth."
A training plan has been drawn up, with the objective of using the potential of ball sports to transmit values and life skills to young people. "This plan has been drawn up with the assistance of the non-governmental organisations (NGO) that operate in New Dawn Park and Thembalethu. The role of the operation and maintenance committees is to ensure on and off the field activities, the maintenance of the structures and community participation and buy-in."
The programme provided funds for the construction of kick-abouts, courts, play parks and pitches and associated equipment for use at the facilities.
