GEORGE NEWS - Seven councillors have ceased to be members of the George Municipal Council, with the changes taking effect from 31 August.

George Municipality confirmed the departures on Wednesday, saying it had received formal notification of the changes and was following the required processes to deal with the resulting vacancies.

The councillors who have left the council are Enrico Figland (VF+), Faith Mdaka (ANC), Zukile Gom (ANC), Druzelda Jantjies (PBI), Darryl Coeriecious (PBI), Jacobus Gertse (PBI) and Ebrahim America (DA).

The municipality’s announcement comes amid recent political changes in the George council, including councillors leaving or being removed from their respective political parties.

Acting Municipal Manager Dr Dean O’Neill said the municipality was issuing the clarification because some of the former councillors were allegedly continuing to engage with the public on social media in a way that could suggest they still served on council.

“Residents and stakeholders are advised that, with effect from 31 August 2026, the individuals listed above no longer hold office as councillors of the George Municipality,” O’Neill said.

He added that they no longer represented the political parties listed alongside their names in their former councillor capacities.

“Members of the public are encouraged to take note of this change in the composition of Council and to ensure that any
engagement or communication purporting to be undertaken on behalf of George Municipality is directed through the Municipality’s official channels,” said Dr O’Neill.

The vacancies will be filled through the applicable legislative and electoral processes, with further details to be announced by the municipality.
