GEORGE NEWS - York High learners received 20 places in the top ten for the final rounds in public speaking at three different national competitions, of which 'Tip of your Tongue' was held in Pretoria two weeks ago.
The other two national competitions include the South African Literacy Association (Sala) and the Inter-schools competition.
"The competition was tough, but the Yorkies did not stand back and showed their skills are just as good or even better. We would like to thank the parents and private sponsors that made it financially possible to attend this competition," said Emsie de Lange of York High.
Grade 9 learner Abigail Kok deserves a special mention with her achievements - three first places in total, including the Golden Tongue category in the national round, for which participants receive a five-minute preparation time.
Other learners who excelled are Grace Alicino (Gr 8; 1st place in Sala competition), Caydon Bean (Gr 9), Vincent Alicino (Gr 10), Allen Grootboom (Gr 10; 1st place in Inter-schools competition), Jordan Meyer (Gr 11), Himmath Maharaj (Gr 11), Tshepo Kolonzi (Gr 11) and Gr 12 learners Amani Lamprecht, Katherine Armstrong, Ludolph Pedro and Wezlyn April.
"We are looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Abigail and the other amazing speakers at York High. We are so proud of our students who earned their places in the Top 6," said De Lange.
"Do not underestimate the value of the skills you acquire doing public speaking, no first or last place can ever take that away from you."
