GEORGE NEWS - Students of the Western Cape Community Education and Training College (CETC) in George had a great opportunity on Monday 8 May to learn more about possible career and study options available in the market.
A career guidance programme, hosted by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) at the George Civic Centre, was specially put together for the 620 students who are currently studying through the George Community Learning Centre, which falls under the Western Cape CETC.
Speakers on the programme highlighted various study programmes, including the Second Chance Matric Programme, as well as services and training provided by bodies such as the National Artisan Unit, Kheta Development Services and the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (Nemisa).
A number of public and private institutions also manned information stalls where learners were able to obtain more details of possible training and career opportunities.

According to George Community Learning Centre manager Carlene Swartz, they have three lecture centres, one in the city centre in York Street, one at the Thembalethu Thusong Centre and a third at the Atkinson Manor premises in Pacaltsdorp.
"We assist learners who have fallen out of school and are above the school age in their grade. We offer the Second Chance Matric Programme as well as various courses in the business field, tourism, early childhood development and health. The majority of students who complete their training with us, go to a TVET college for further education."
Learners from the Van Kervel and Olympia schools, where Grade 9 is not offered, are also able to obtain their Grade 9 through the Community Learning Centre, which enables them to enrol at TVET colleges.
