GEORGE NEWS - A 24-year-old man was stabbed to death following racist remarks and insults about manhood on Sunday 10 February in Asazani, Thembalethu.
According to the police the deceased, Sonwabile Homsi, was with a group of four men when one of them made racially derogatory remarks to another man who is believed to be coloured. The remarks also questioned his manhood. When Homsi tried to intervene in defence of the coloured male, he was stabbed and died on the scene. Following this incident, a 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder.
Apart from racism, arguments about manhood seem to be a common circumstance leading to murder in Thembalethu. On 28 August last year, a 30-year-old Thembalethu man was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the George Regional Court for stabbing another man to death in an argument over manhood in 2016. The argument started when the accused called the deceased "ikwekwe" (boy).
On 13 November 2018 two men appeared in the George Magistrate's Court after allegedly stabbing to death another man in Thembalethu during a circumcision ceremony. According to police, they were among a group of men arguing about manhood. When the fight broke out, Zethu Nqandela was stabbed and hacked on his upper body. He died on the scene.
Captain Dumile Gwavu, Thembalethu police communications officer, urged people to respect one another and learn to live in peace.
