GEORGE NEWS - Employees of the George Post Office in York Street have declared themselves willing to foot the bill to install a sprinkler system on the stoep of the premises in an effort to deter vagrants who insist on making it their home on weekends and after hours.
Every morning, for many years now, employees have been cleaning up behind the overnighters and clients have been complaining repeatedly.
Emma Tshatsinde of the communications section of the Post Office said, "After numerous dialogues with the Properties section, we were advised that we would not be able to add fencing around the building as the area is regarded as municipal property.
"The SA Police Service together with the municipal public authorities are not of much assistance as this is a problem in the general society."
The employees decided it might assist if water sprinklers were installed, a method proven effective in a neighbouring building.
"Properties and the handyman are currently establishing the most cost-effective method of having this installed.
"The company itself does not have a budget for this, so it will take time as the employees will be footing the bill themselves. For now all we can do as employees is to remove the vagrants daily and clean up before we open the next day," said Tshatsinde.
She said the police will continue to monitor the situation each time they go on patrol in order to keep the premises safe.
