GEORGE NEWS - Bats are fascinating creatures that play an important role in our environment. They are often misunderstood and feared, but it is important to understand their importance and protect them.
Bats are important pollinators and seed dispersers, helping to maintain healthy ecosystems. In fact, some species of bats are responsible for pollinating crops that we rely on for food. Bats also control insect populations such as mosquitoes and other critters.
Illegal to harm bats
It is illegal to harm or kill bats in South Africa. Although bats may take up residence in buildings, which can cause damage and health risks, it is advised to take the humane approach to have them removed by trained professionals who can safely remove bats from buildings without harming them or their pups.
"Like all indigenous wildlife, bats are protected by law, and those who are caught harming or killing them can face hefty fines or even imprisonment in some cases," says Josh Kleyn, CEO and founder of Exclusive Eco.
"Attempting to remove bats on your own is not a good idea. Rather get a spesialised service with the correct training and experience."
Breeding season
Bat breeding season is from September to March. This is the time when bats tend to breed in ceilings.
"It is important to have any bat exclusions done outside of this time, as it is illegal to remove bats during their breeding season," says Kleyn.
By protecting bats and allowing them to thrive, we are also protecting our environment and the important role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
