GEORGE NEWS - There is a saying: No news is good news. Hopefully this is also the case with the outcome of the investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) into alleged fraud and corruption at George Municipality.
In April this year the Hawks conducted a raid at the municipality as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud and corruption relating to irregular tender procurements and procedures.
The George Mayor, Melvin Naik, and the Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha, were implicated, amongst others.
Spokesperson of the Hawks, Philani Nkwalase, said earlier that the investigation is still ongoing and that they will, upon finality, issue a statement on possible arrests. He confirmed this week that the status quo is still applicable.
Besides the investigation by the police, the DA held their own internal hearings on unrelated matters. Naik's homophobic comments on a local radio station, amongst other things, got him into trouble with his party, and he had to attend a few hearings in this regard. However, nothing has come of it yet.
Elsabe Oosthuysen of the office of James Selfe, chairperson of the DA's Federal Executive Committee, confirmed that there are no new developments at this stage.
