GEORGE NEWS - Dr Lukas du Preez, a retired advocate who specialised in labour law for more than 40 years, will present a labour law crash course on Wednesday 19 October from 09:00 to 13:00 at the George Conference Hall (Civic Centre).
Du Preez consulted for major employers across the country. All the proceeds of the course will go exclusively to further the objectives of the local non-profit organisation, Harmony Spiritual and Emotional Healing.
The course will focus on the most important risk areas related to current labour law in South Africa with the aim at avoiding costly labour disputes by creating awareness of the risk areas in labour law, for example:
• Effective discipline with the focus on management prerogatives: video illustrations depicting the roles of participants in a disciplinary hearing shall be used;
• The concepts of fairness, consistency, suspension, desertion, demotion, fixed-term contracts, sick certificates, incapacity, incompetence, incompatibility, poor performance, negligence, dishonesty, intoxication, harassment etc;
• Union interaction, strike handling (assisted by video material on the actual dealing with a strike), the impact of Covid-19 on the employment relationship and recent developments and changes to labour legislation;
• A comprehensive workbook and updated draft employment contracts shall be issued to all participants.
This will be a fast-moving, practical and compact presentation aimed at senior and middle management, supervisors, human resource employees, consultants and attorneys. The cost is R695 per person including coffee and light snacks.

Community projects
Harmony Spiritual and Emotional Healing and various other role players have in the past months joined hands in a number of projects aimed at uplifting the community and helping poor people.
In the Rosemoor area in particular, the focus is on providing support for food distribution to the needy, with the emphasis being on a holistic approach, to not only provide food, clothing and a cleaner environment, but to empower people to help themselves and to also enhance communities on an emotional, spiritual and social level.
What started off with projects focused on distribution of basic needs such as food and clothes, has expanded to other areas, including creating awareness of the importance of a cleaner environment, the dangers of substance abuse and related matters.
