GEORGE NEWS - George Detectives are investigating a house robbery following an incident in Mann Street, George East on Sunday 16 August at about 07:30.
A couple, the owners of the property, were in their home when it happened.
"It is alleged that the couple were in the residence when they noticed a man with a knife in the kitchen. The man threatened the couple and an altercation ensued.”
Spies said the robber took a cell phone and fled the scene. "Both victims sustained open wounds to their hands. The suspect is still at large, but all leads are being followed up."
George Herald reached out to the wife, but she said they were still too traumatised to talk about the incident.
A nearby neighbour, who wants to remain anonymous, said she was shocked to learn of the incident and they have since installed an additional security gate.
"I'm now afraid to keep any doors open whereas before I felt safe doing it. I feel like a prisoner in my own house. It's awful."
She and two other residents have aired their concern about men standing around every day in First and Second streets, seeking piece jobs. These streets intersect Mann Street.
One resident said, “Some of these people may be genuinely looking for work, but I believe some are only there under the guise of being job seekers. We feel unsafe and it’s an issue we have taken up numerous times in the past with the authorities.”
George Herald has sent an enquiry to George Municipality regarding pleas from these residents that the law enforcement department should step up their actions.
