GEORGE NEWS - Georgian Shaun Butler is over the moon after winning the disability division at the Western Cape Physical Culture Association championships in Durbanville today, Saturday 20 August.
He is new to competitive bodybuilding, having started earlier this year by entering his first competition, held by the International Federation of Body Building and Fitness (IBFF), in Mossel Bay.
He won second place.
He told George Herald tonight about being provincial champion in his division, "I am humbled. It is a sport I was hesitant to compete in because of the physical abilities required, but I was highly motivated by my brother and partner."
He says their encouragement improved his self-confidence to continue not only in body building but also crossfit and wheelchair racing.
Butler took part in his first Outeniqua Chair Challenge (OCC) 5km fun event in 2015, using a regular wheelchair. He saw the potential of racing as a sport and acquired a racing cycle in 2016. Two months after starting to train in his new chair, he completed his first 50km event. In 2017 he took part in the OCC 42km marathon.
