"The Garden Route Dam is visited by thousands of tourists and visitors annually and the George Municipality had to implement certain measures in order to preserve and protect the environment and water resources and to ensure a healthy ecosystem," says Mr Barend Nelson, head of the Department of Community Safety Services.
The main entrance to the Garden Route Dam is monitored by a security officer and all people entering the gate are required to sign a register. Furthermore, people who wish to visit the dam 30 minutes after sunset need to apply for a permit beforehand.
Permits may be obtained from the offices of the Law Enforcement Section in Cathedral Street at the back of the Fire Section building.
The following are not allowed:
- shows, entertainment, business or trade of any kind or industry;
- races, events, regattas or quad bikes;
- overnighting;
- motor boats or outboard machines;
- fires;
- alcohol;
- dumping, including in the dam
- Swimming is prohibited unless written approval has been obtained.
- No fishing competitions may be held (catch and release and research will be allowed by written permission only).
- No person will be allowed, either intentionally or negligently, to commit any act or disturb the peace which may cause an inconve-nience to others.
- No person may remove any signage erected by the municipality.
- No person may enter infrastructure managed by the George Municipality, such as the pump station and tower in the Garden Route Dam.
