GEORGE NEWS - A cat from Parkdene was given a second lease on life when he was saved by Coriza Vermeulen of Cat Assistance Team (Cat) Garden Route on 3 January.
“Coriza brought Snowy to us for medical attention as he had a fractured elbow,” said Dr Shirley Smith, the vet who treated Snowy.
“As surgery was not an option due to the type of injury, we had to use a Robert Jones* bandage on Snowy's leg.” Snowy was kept at the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) until early February when he was discharged after being neutered and vaccinated.
“Snowy was reunited with his owner, Dorothie Pietersen, who can't stop thanking us for what we have done for her beloved cat. With welfare organisations working together, we can continue as a whole to better the lives of animals in need,” said Smith.
In January alone, the PDSA animal hospital treated 150 surgical cases ranging from orthopaedic problems, stitch-ups and growth removals to dental issues and sterilisations.
The Robert Jones bandage is a thick, padded bandage classically applied to the thigh and leg. It is thought to reduce swelling by applying even pressure to the extremity, which in turn should promote healing.
