AGRICULTURAL NEWS - John Steenhuisen stated during the August congress of Free State Agriculture that agriculture needs a minister who is on their side and works with farmers.
He emphasised that the agricultural sector can unlock new markets overseas, expand production capacity, and create jobs for unskilled labor through close cooperation.
“I think we are going into a future, marching determinedly, to work together to grow the economy, to create jobs, end poverty, to bring certainty to the sector, and then to unleash the sector's true potential,” Steenhuisen assured, referring to the congress’s theme, “Quo Vadis?”, Latin for “Where are we going?”.
Steenhuisen mentioned that South Africa has the best farmers in the world and can compete on the global market against highly subsidised nations.
To achieve this, a regulated environment must be created that will enable the sector to thrive through the use of modern technology.
The minister also highlighted the importance of rural safety and biosecurity, including vaccines.
He acknowledged the issues with Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) in vaccine production: “OBP has a new CEO, and he will receive clear and strict instructions regarding the turnaround expected of him. If OBP cannot meet the demand, the provision of vaccines will be opened up to the private sector.”
Steenhuisen expressed hope that South African agricultural products will, by the end of his term, be synonymous with the best biosecurity in the world.
The minister further explained how reservists, as well as the use of technology such as drones, cameras, and tracking systems, can be employed to enhance rural safety and track down stolen livestock. “Safety and biosecurity are everyone’s responsibility,” Steenhuisen affirmed.
