GEORGE NEWS - The South Cape Association of Visual Artists (Scava) held the opening evening and prize-giving for its annual Visual Expressions competition on Friday 6 September.
This much-anticipated event was a dazzling showcase of artistic talent hosted at the Sayer's Auditorium of the George Museum.
The competition invited local artists to submit works in still life, portraits, landscapes, wildlife, or abstract, with prizes awarded in each category.
All the entries for the competition form part of an exhibition currently on display at the auditorium and are also for sale.
The judges, Hermann Niebuhr, Liza Grobler, and Fawa Conradie, three internationally acclaimed South African artists, had an immense task in selecting the winners.
With more than 187 works of high standard submitted by over 64 artists, first-place prizes were awarded to Lynda Murison, Kala Combrink, Anthea-Anne Jennings and Niki Saunders in the still life, portraiture, landscape, wildlife and abstract categories respectively.
Anthea-Ann Jennings won the first prize in the landscape category with her painting, Catching the Sunset.
Fundraiser for Odin
This year, Scava introduced its Odin fundraiser which invited artists to submit miniature artworks on canvas to be sold at a set price of R500 each, of which proceeds go to Odin.
These miniature works are currently on display for purchase in the auditorium.
"A special thanks go to Michelangelo Hair for sponsoring the first place prizes in each of the five categories, as well as Wildeman, Attic Atelier, Artscatalogue, Hannelien Hattingh, René Scribante Loft Studio, The Little Art Shop and Artsavingsclub who all helped make the event such an evening to remember," said Scava's René Scribante.
Members of the public are invited to view the works on weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays from 09:00 to 12:00.
Lynda Murison won first prize for her still life, Cacti.
