GEORGE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - Two top shows that promise to have their audiences in stitches are coming up at the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre soon, starring some of South Africa's best-loved stage artists.
Pieter-Dirk Uys brings his latest show, When in Doubt say Darling!, and Ian von Memerty and Gino Fabbri will be here with their hilarious show, Common and Class.
A Dar(l)ing angle on politics
Sometimes politics repeats itself, not only taking history and turning it into farce, but taking farce and turning it into the fake news which is now called entertainment.
After a sold-out season at Pieter Toerien's Montecasino Studio and the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town, Pieter-Dirk Uys brings When in Doubt say Darling! to George from 14 to 16 February.
Uys is sorting out 40 years of distress, disguise and disgust: from apartheid to tripartite, from amandla to Nkandla - and happily back to amandla. Celebrate the appearances of Angela Merkel, Theresa May, Nowell Fine and Evita Bezuidenhout!
Join him and many darlings on an exciting walk through this new minefield of hashtags and hate speech to the edge of the next cliff of crisis, when the end of the world seems nigh. It also used to be called a sunset, but here's a secret: the sun will also rise tomorrow, darling. For early birds, tickets go at R120, members pay R130 and non-members R150.
Pieter-Dirk Uys.
Belly-laugh battle
It's a rare treat when two superb entertainers unite for a class act. That's exactly what Centrestage has done in pairing Ian von Memerty with Gino Fabbri in the hilarious new show, Common and Class.
The show is named after the characters – Fabbri is raw, rough and ready, while Von Memerty is super-smooth. Together, the two are genius, generating music, madness and heaps of belly laughs. Von Memerty's keyboard skills are legendary, as is his versatility.
However, Fabbri's guitar skills have only recently been unearthed after years of battering the drums and tickling the funny bones. Toss in a few dance moves and it's hilarious chaos.
See Fabbri thrust his hips through the Floss, and enjoy the delectable sight of Von Memerty doing the Time warp. His take on the Sweet Transvestite of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a peachy role for this triple threat of the theatre.
The revue has a rather naughty script - quick and clever. It includes musical medleys where Common and Class battle out their respective cultural backgrounds in song. Linking mellow ballads with rock stadium belters, they gallop through their repertoire with brisk and bouncy joie de vivre.
It's a brand-new show and in the Boet and Swaer skit on ageing, it is clear the gents on stage are having a ball.
Common and class join battle in the hilarious show by smooth Ian von Memerty and crazy chameleon Gino Fabbri at the George Arts Theatre in March.
A Handful of Keys and TV shows like Strictly Come Dancing and SA's Got Talent have given Von Memerty a national profile, and Fabbri is a well-known and beloved crazy chameleon.
The interval is much needed - not only to refresh the energies of the cast, but also to give your stomach muscles a break.
The show will be staged on 8 and 9 March. Early bird tickets are R90, while members/pensioners/kids pay R110 and non-members R150.
