GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Carpe Musicam! Orchestra and Choir concerts keep getting better.
The spring concert, titled Classics from the Movies, was wonderful.
It was performed three times - in Sedgefield, George and Mossel Bay.
Packed
The Mossel Bay concert on Sunday, 6 October, in the town hall, was packed.
The music was upbeat and the concert fast paced. There were several standing ovations during the show.
Mozart's Samba Alla Turca was a delight; what joy.
Selma Janse van Rensburg was highly enthusiastic on the cymbals.
Energetic
Each time she clashed them, she gave an energetic bop with her knees, as if she were about to take off in flight. It was a treat to see.
The repertoire was varied and interesting, keeping one on one's toes.
Johann Strauss' Radetzky March, Giuseppe Verdi's Va Pensiero and Goin' Home by Antonin Dvorak were some of the highlights.
Cherith Bain's violin playing in Scheherazade Goes Latin was noteworthy, as was Sanri Oosthuizen, on the flute, in Va Pensiero - so beautiful and poignant.
Spectacular touch
Something which added a spectacular touch to this concert was the claves - two short, wooden sticks banged together.
It's a marvel how small touches can be used to great effect.
The choir's sound has developed greatly. It has always been good, but somehow the sound has become rounder, deeper and more resonant - even more beautiful than before.
Joyful, spirited
If the spring concert was so joyful and spirited, one can only imagine what a celebration the Christmas concerts will be.
They take place at 15:30 on 8 December at the Dutch Reformed Church in Sedgefield; at 19:00 on 13 December at Outeniqua High School, George; and at 18:00 on 15 December in the Mossel Bay Town Hall. For more information and to buy tickets, see:
