GEORGE NEWS - The Return Of Elvis Du Pisanie will be on stage at the Market Theatre next week Wednesday 25 September (18:30), for one night only.
Written and directed by well known actor/director Paul Slabolepszy who performed this award-winning one-man play in the early 1990s, the current production performed by actor Ashley Dowds received equally shining reviews.
The Return Of Elvis Du Pisanie has been showcased throughout the country from Cape Town to Johannesburg, including the Hilton Festival and National Arts Festival, to great acclaim.
The story has been described as sad, amusing and gloriously uplifting. Eddie du Pisanie (played by Ashley Dowds) is a forty-six year old East Rand salesman who is retrenched and decides life is no longer worth living. He writes a suicide note to his wife and is about to gas himself in his car in the garage, when he switches on the car radio.
Eddie almost ends it all, but decides to take one last, idiotic gamble. A memory of a place at a very specific time in his life beams a ray of hope.

In one of the reviews the play is described as "funny, for chuckles rather than guffaws, and then excruciatingly sad".
Dowds quotes one of the critics on his Facebook Page: "Although it’s not new and has won the awards and accolades and been much spoken about, it’s still incredible to sit there in the darkness of the theatre where the focus is one person on a sparse stage, and be transported into the past and its tales of love and tragedy."
Dowds not only plays the title character, but also an entire cast of supporting roles, complete with sound effects.
The production is about 75 minutes in total, with no interval. It has an age restriction (PG13); tickets cost R120 and are available through Heather (072 369 3304) or at the door.
