GEORGE NEWS - A light south-easterly breeze provided scant motivation for the sailors of George Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC) on Sunday 6 March.
The scheduled races comprised the final for the GLYC Chris Thomas trophy. There were 11 boats competing in the event in which two races were sailed.
After the first race, it seemed that the wind had faded, but fortunately it filled in again to permit another to start.
In race 1, the Fireball of David Laing and Anthony Alant established a lead and pulled away ahead of the fleet. Behind them were the Lasers of Henry Paine and Matthew de Villiers contending for the lead among the smaller boats, with De Villiers finishing just ahead of Paine.
Malcolm Osborne was next to finish, ahead of Maurits Lammers and Mark Bennetts.
In race 2, the Laing Fireball once again took the lead and in the fading wind, completed the course in stronger wind than that available for the slower boats. De Villiers got a good start to get a strong lead ahead of the rest, with Paine trying to catch up. This race was shortened in order to finish before the breeze died completely.
De Villiers was the race winner of the first race on handicap, ahead of Paine and Laing / Alant.
Laing / Alant were the winners of the second race, ahead of De Villiers / Paine.
The winner of the Chris Thomas trophy for 2021/2022 was Henry Paine, with Matthew De Villiers in second place and Malcolm Osborne third.
These two both sailed GP14 in the first races in this series, with Chris du Toit and Daniel Kruger their crews.
Matthew de Villiers (right) was the winner of the day, while David Laing (far left) and Anthony Alant were in second place.
Laing was the sponsor of the prizes for the day. Cara Holm's name came out in the lucky draw. She was however not present, so the jackpot increases. For the sailing prizes, De Villiers was the winner of the day, with Laing and Alant in second place.
