Evergreens Rugby Football Club from Pacaltsdorp and Progress Rugby Football Club from Rosemoor received a cheque of R10 000 and R5 000 respectively, as well as certificates from George Mayor Charles Standers, during a prestigious event on 31 October at the George Civic Centre.
According to Debra Sauer, George Municipality assistant media liaison officer, both clubs will participate in the upcoming Mayoral Cup 2014 Sevens Tournament.
The award ceremony also included senior representatives of SWD rugby who are the custodians of organised club rugby in the region.
Evergreens, from Pacaltsdorp, is the SWD premier league champions and will accordingly participate in the Cell C Community Tournament at Outeniqua Park in March next year, as one of the top eight clubs in the country.
Progress was the semifinalist in the SWD premier league tournament but lost to the Barbarians from Mossel Bay. Both clubs were honoured in the same fashion that Evergreens and Blanco United were honoured in 2012, said Sauer.
According to Standers, George Council is aiming to strengthen sport within the various sport codes within George. These include rugby, football, netball, cricket, athletics, cross country, boxing and school sport.
"It is the view of George Municipality that sport remains a useful and unifying vehicle to build credible partnerships across social, cultural and economic divides," said Standers.
