GEORGE NEWS - A hugely successful Outeniqua Open Disc Golf event was held at the Rooirivierrif sports grounds on Saturday 16 March.
The event included a morning 18-hole round, which determined the lead cards for the afternoon 18-hole round. Best par score over two rounds determined the winners in each division.
"Being Outeniqua Disc Golf's first event sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) meant that they were able to attract some of the best disc golf players from around the country, as well as securing sponsorship from one of the biggest disc manufacturers with the assistance, support and prize sponsorship from Disc Golf South Africa.
"It was a ground-breaking achievement for the development of the sport in South Africa," says Outeniqua Disc Golf chairperson Leon Strauss.
A total of 39 players took part in the Outeniqua Open and despite challenging wind throughout the morning as well as light rain in the afternoon, they saw some great competition within all divisions and all the players had great fun.

The mixed amateur 1 (MA1) division was won by the national champion, Alex Meuelenbeld, who managed to set a course record for local players to work towards, and demonstrated his expert ability to control his disc flights despite the high winds. Female amateur 2 (FA2) was won by Josephine Meulenbeld; her first title win and a wonderful achievement for South African disc golf's most recently wed disc golfers.
Mixed amateur 2 went to Bryan Wilson, winning by a narrow margin in the most contested division. Mixed amateur 3 was won by Robert Brewis and female amateur 4 by Licia van der Westhuizen.
A total of eight players took part in mixed junior u.15, with ages ranging from 6 to 15 years. The win went to Heathe Hilbert (13), holding on to his title as the best u.15 player. "Disc Golf George is particularly invested in encouraging the participation of younger players with a focus on family involvement as well as developing our future disc golf champions," says Strauss.
"Countrywide, disc golf membership and participation have been growing rapidly and George is no exception."
"We have established a free-to-play 18-hole course at Rooirivierrif that is available to anybody who is interested in trying out the sport," he says.
Discs can be hired or purchased from Disc Golf George and regular players are available to introduce new players to the sport.
They host regular outings for players and will be planning some more league games as well as weekend challenges for anybody who would like to join the club. Players of all ages are welcome.
Disc Golf George thanked their headline sponsor, She Group (Safety, Health and Environmental Group) as well as all the other sponsors who sponsored the gazeboes, tee-boxes and prizes.
