FOOTBALL NEWS - In cloudy weather on Saturday morning, 25 November, the Oudtshoorn Infantry Base football team visited George to honour their Safa Eden Regional League fixture against the Lawaaikamp side, Simunye.
Simunye dropped vital points at home when they went down 4-3 in a tough game at the Lawaaikamp Stadium.
Khethukuthula Mbambo, Qhamani Tshandu (brace) and Eveton Maxim scored for Infantry School while Siyabonga Dlamini, Onika Zenzile and Yamkela Ntlaba putting Simunye's score on the board.
The home side started the match but were immediately faced with an attack by the visiting side that saw Khethukuthula Mbambo of Infantry School score the opening goal within the first five minutes. Simunye retaliated with a positive attack, but missed their chance.
Branven Kamfer of Infantry School tried his luck just outside the box, but his strike went wide. Siyabonga Miggels of Simunye also failed to score when his strike went over the bar. Infantry School received a penalty, which was excellently blocked by Simunye goalkeeper Nkosikhona Moss.
After missing this perfect chance from the penalty spot, Siyabonga Dlamini scored an equalising goal for Simunye, making it 1-1. Both teams showed good form towards the last moments of the first half. When the whistle blew for the break, the score line was 1-1.
The second half saw both teams chasing the game with Infantry trying to play the ball on the ground. An Infantry defender made a malicious tackle inside the box, giving away a penalty to Simunye. Zenzile Onika scored from the penalty shot making it 2-1.
This was soon followed by another goal by Yamkela Ntlaba to make it 3-1. However, Simunye failed to defend their lead. The Oudtshoorn side came back with full force and Eveton Maxim scored their second goal to make it 3-2 after a strong attack from the centre of the field.
The military base team threw everything into the attack and the centre middle fielder Qhamani Tshandu surprised everyone when he not only scored the equalising goal for Infantry School, but followed it up with the winning goal, making it 4-3.
The star of the game, the 21-year-old Tshandu told George Herald that his dream is to become a professional athlete and get to wear the Mamelodi Sundowns colours.
